The architectural motif of the window and, by association, transparency and the interrelation of inside and outside space play an important role in the film and photographic works of the artist Martina Wolf. Whereas initially, the outward gaze was restricted and formed by translucent curtains, clouded glass, reflections or buildings blocking the view, in her new Frankfurt window images, Martina Wolf obstructs the view by painting onto the windowpanes themselves. The blindspots thus created transform the very same view out the window into new cityscapes which, according to each new arrangement, seem to have been topographically-planned or to have simply grown organically. It’s not only the image which is relevant, but rather the many possibilties which allow the viewer of the photographs and videos to find his or her own idea. The actual state is transformed to become a model of a reality.
