Hannes Broecker
Hannes Broecker’s chief interest lies in the language of symbols and the aesthetics of public space. In his work, prevailing classification systems and urban structures are translated and abstracted using a variety of formats, ranging from installations and objects to canvas and video. Despite this range of media, Broecker sees himself primarly as a painter. He takes graffiti and slogans, colour codes from billboards and construction hoarding, reflective and crumbling façades that tell of power and powerlessness, and transforms them into painted images. Broecker eschews concrete representation in favour of allusion through synonyms, symbols, and fragments. Condensing and reducing his subject, he aims to focus on colour and the discovery of unique forms. Broecker’s work atlantic drive/compton crip provides a perfect example of this approach: the barricade-like shape alludes to conflicts; the colour blue to the Crip gang in Los Angeles; and the protective layer of paint to a defensive posture.
